What’s & Why’s

Whatever you did yesterday and whatever you do today…..that thing you do for 40-50 hours a week to make a living….why do you do it?

“Well, I have to work…”

“Why?”

“To make money.”

“Okay, but why?”

“To take care of me and my family’s needs.”

“Okay, that’s really what you do. What you do is make money to take care of those you are responsible for.”

Now, answer the real question: Why do you do what you do? Because at the end of it all, it is never about money. Even when you insist that is all it is about. “Man, I just do it for the paycheck.” Really?

Deep in our souls, we want our work to impact, change, affect, transform something. We want our time to matter, to make some dent or difference in the world before we die.

This week, I talked to a mainstream university coach who is impacting, changing, affecting, and transforming more lives than many of the pastors I know. It looks like he spends 60 hours a week coaching and trying to win games for a paycheck, but that’s the what. His focus is all about the why. And that is exactly why his life is making a difference.

So, let me ask again: why do you do what you do?
