Spring Cleaning for the Soul

This time of year, we often see people outside cleaning their windows, screens, and flower beds, powerwashing everything in sight, but also doing what back in the day they called spring cleaning of their houses….. moving furniture, dusting, and getting all the cobwebs out of all the nooks and crannies that had gathered there over the winter.

In our crazy, fast-paced world, it is a really good idea to do the same with our souls.

Carve out some alone time with no distractions and just invite the Holy Spirit into every “room in your house.” Its interesting how when we do that, we realize we have some rooms locked away from His presence…some bad attitudes tucked away in the corner, some ill motives stuffed under the bed, and some anger simmering on the back burner.

When was the last time you hit your knees, humbled yourself, and asked God to come in and take over your whole house? No room locked away in secret, nothing hidden, nothing held back? Sweep the house, Lord. It’s a good thing to volunteer that to Him before He decides to bring a circumstance into your life that will do it for you because you refuse to do windows.

Generous in love—God, give grace! Huge in mercy—wipe out my bad record. Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry. I know how bad I’ve been; my sins are staring me down. You’re the One I’ve violated, and you’ve seen it all, seen the full extent of my evil. You have all the facts before you; whatever you decide about me is fair. I’ve been out of step with you for a long time, in the wrong since before I was born. What you’re after is truth from the inside out. Enter me, then; conceive a new, true life. Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life. —Psalm 51:1-7 MSG
