I have a close friend who shared with me that when he was younger and had given his life to Christ, he was still struggling with several sins, one of them regarding his purity. He said as he read Paul’s letters, he began to understand that the Word of God was God’s “raw material” to create in him a new mind transformed and surrendered to Christ.
So he decided that every day, however long he spent in his sin, he was going to read the Bible 5 minutes longer than that. So, for example, at the end of the day, if he had spent an hour indulging in sin, he then read the Bible for an hour and five minutes.
As he kept this new commitment and discipline up, over time, he started noticing that his sin was decreasing but his time in the Word wasn’t. Finally, he completely lost the desire for many of the sins he had in the past committed large amounts of time and energy toward. They were gone, but the Word remained. His mind was rapidly being transformed and the sins that had plagued him for years became a thing of the past.
God’s Word, coupled with the power of the Holy Spirit in us, is a powerful weapon to defeat sin, defend our faith, and advance the Kingdom in us, to lead us to love God more than our own mess.
No wonders in very busy lives, the enemy works so hard to convince us we don’t have time or somehow what we are going through right now, the words won’t be “relevant” to our struggle.
“Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” Jesus in John 17:17 NLT
