Fake I.D
Decades ago, someone came up with the concept of the fake I.D. High school and college students still make them today, as they did 30 years ago. In TV shows and movies, we see them created for all sorts of covert situations.
The bottom line of the fake I.D. is to pass yourself off as something you either are not, or someone you want to appear to be, or a mixture of both. Sometimes a person’s original I.D. becomes so corrupted, they feel they must change it to have any sort of normalcy moving forward.
The truth is our culture—both non-Christian and Christian—is rampant with people using fake I.D.’s. No, they don’t have anything physical other than their driver’s license in their wallets, but the concept has the same result.
Here are some introspective questions regarding your own I.D.:
1—Do you work to pass yourself off as someone else?
If the answer is yes, then do you practice this everywhere or just certain places? Then the real question to answer is why?
2—Do you long to be someone you are not?
While this question may appear the same as question 1, it has a bit different spin. This primarily occurs when there is someone in your life you are trying to emulate or please, so you actually start working to be that person, rather than you. Again, the real question is why do you do this?
3—Do you feel who you are is so corrupted you need another identity to get back to normal?
We are all guilty of 1 and 2 at times in our lives, with an occasional season of 3 mixed in.
If we will be honest about any current identity issues and then work to figure out the “why,” there is some very good news to share.
When we are born, our Creator hardwired us with an identity that is purely 100% our own, given from Him—our personality, gifts, talents, skills, etc. placed inside to be a unique individual unlike any other. God’s desire is we then follow Him and allow His influence and molding to maximize our identity in and through His life.
Sin enters the picture, coupled with the activity of our enemy, and begins to tell us who we are is not good enough, not acceptable, and not complete. And, in so many cases, convinces us that God is actually a huge part of the problem, so He should be factored out as soon as possible.
The answer to a consistent, secure, accepted, redeemed, and maximized identity is to accept our true identity in and through the work of Christ. No need to be anyone else; no need to be something we are not, and no need to even be concerned any longer with a past corrupted I.D. He is enough; therefore, we have enough. He is complete; therefore, we may be complete. He is authentic; therefore we may be authentic.
As men who are Christ-followers, let’s burn our fake I.D’s and carry the only one that matters anymore . . . I am a child of God.
